Transform Your Garden with Winter Natives

Written by Steve Nassar

As the leaves fall and the garden quiets down, it’s easy to think the beauty of your yard has gone into hibernation. But winter landscapes don’t have to feel bare. With a little planning, Northwest native plants can bring color, texture and life to your outdoor spaces all season long.

Evergreens like Shore Pine and Oregon Grape stand strong through the cold months, adding structure and depth to the garden. The twisted form of the Shore Pine and the rich red-to-maroon tones of Oregon Grape make them standout choices for visual interest when most other plants are resting.

For groundcover, Kinnikinnick and Salal are reliable favorites. Their deep green leaves create a lush backdrop even in the coldest months, while their low-growing forms help tie the landscape together. Deer Fern and Sword Fern add beautiful texture, with arching fronds that stay green year-round and bring movement to shaded spaces.

If you want a pop of color, Red-Twig Dogwood is hard to beat. Its vibrant red stems brighten gray days and look striking against snow or evergreen backdrops. For something more sculptural, the peeling orange bark of the Madrone tree creates a dramatic focal point in every season, especially when surrounded by evergreens.

Even subtler plants can shine in winter. Serviceberry offers graceful, silvery branches that add shape and contrast, while Licorice Fern comes alive just when everything else seems asleep, sprouting bright green along mossy trees and rocks as it signals that spring isn’t far off. Wild Rose brings its own winter charm with red hips that attract birds and add natural color to the landscape.

Together, these native plants bring structure, contrast and life to winter gardens, keeping your property vibrant through every season.
